This week the McDonald’s ‘Taste of America’ burger is the New York Classic.

Described on their website as ‘100% beef patty, bacon, ketchup, mustard, red onions, cool mayo, shredded lettuce and cheese. All in a chilli, chive and sesame-topped bun’ it’s good to see they haven’t gone for crispy onions this time and instead put some big chunky bits of real onion in the burger.

Nice to see some mustard being added too, but mayo, ketchup and mustard…overkill? The bun sounds a little busy too with it’s three sprinkles topping it off.

Are all these flavours and sauces going to work together? Let’s find out…

Yes there’s onion!

A good flavour from the beef, cheese and bacon but there is a worrying amount of mayo. I don’t mean the mayo scared me but there was lots…and lots. They had also piled on the lettuce along with a serious amount of onion.

So taking a bite further into the burger there it was, a torrent of mayo and strong onion flavour making it feel like perhaps this should be the Paris rather New York classic burger.

The American cheese was prominent and although that mayo and onion wouldn’t get out of the way the beef stood up and held a good flavour in the balance.

Where’s the mustard?

The main flavours stayed but the chilli that was supposed to be adorning the bun was simply undetectable but the chive did manage to stand out and was pretty enjoyable when you got a little burst of flavour from it. .

Another flavour which never made it was the mustard. I don’t know whether they omitted it or that the sea of mayo drowned it out completely but it simply wasn’t there. This is a shame as I love that sweet American mustard McDonald’s put on the Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

More mustard and less (even no) mayo in this please Ronald! Also you can ditch the bun and go for a straight forward sesame…now that would be classic.

Please remember to comment below if you have tried the New York Classic burger!

  1. Hi Michael. I’ll probably never taste a New York Burger at McDonald’s, but it’s always interesting to me to see what American companies market in other parts of the world. Like Walmart having big open bins of fresh fish in the Orient and muu-muus in Hawaii. We’d never see those things here in the heart of Walmart land. (And to be perfectly clear, I never want to live where there isn’t a WalMart.)

Anyway, although I avoid most cities like the plague, it is my understanding that New Yorkers traditionally don’t put mustard on hamburgers – mustard is for hot dogs, ketchup is for hamburgers. I don’t know about mayo. I personally don’t like it on hamburgers and just like ketchup and mustard. Never heard of that kind of bun, either, though when I was in NYC many moons ago I just ate Indian, Italian, and Chinese food LOL

    All the best,
    Leslie
