What meal do you miss?

No I don’t mean skipping breakfast, I’m talking about the meal you can’t do without.

Yes burgers are good…

As I pondered writing this post there were so many meals I love but it’s the ones that when I don’t have them for a few days/weeks they become an itch I need to scratch that I wanted to pin down.

I mean I often fancy a burger but I can’t say that when I do that is the only option that will suffice. .

When I was travelling and living abroad some years ago I kept dreaming about one thing for dinner, sausage, mashed potatoes and cabbage with fried onions and brown sauce. Even at the time it seemed strange to me as I would never have said that this was my favourite dish, in fact not even close, yet something deep inside me craved this comfort food. Once I arrived in Australia after eating my way through a good swath of Asia, I tried to construct this simple meal to satisfy my S&M cravings 😉

I took a while but I did it. The Aussie sausages where not quite right so I found an English butcher to make me some the UK way and I sourced a bottle of HP.  Once these key factors were in place I had my plate of food and it hit the spot. Strangely I never made that meal again until I returned back to Blighty, just having it that one time killed the craving.

The Sunday roast is something that I really miss if I haven’t had one in a while. This is of course more apparent during the colder months when the thought of a ‘gravy dinner’ is just so appealing. Growing up we had a roast every Sunday so I’m kind of programmed to expect one.

It’s what I crave!

What gets me these days is curry. The night before I go on holiday I have a curry, and I do again the night I get back.

I can’t go more than a week without a curry and having become addicted to chilli spice I can honestly say I crave it more than any other cuisine. The thing that satisfies me is a hot spicy lamb curry with plain boiled rice. This simple combination just hits the spot, of course I’m happy to have a few other dishes on the side.

What meal do you miss? Please share below what food you crave and can’t do without.

  2. I seriously don’t think that I crave a meal…. any time that I have a craving it seems to be chocolate… or sweet… Cant’ say that I have craved anything in particular… I’ll have to keep my attention on that and see what I come up with!! Perhaps I crave it and i’m somewhere where I can have it so I don’t think it’s a craving!!

    1. Holly, i think lots of people out there crave a bit of chocolate or something sweet 🙂 I think the craving comfort food is a big one so would love to hear if you come up with anything.

  3. That’s an easy one for me Michael – carne asada, enchiladas, tacos, chili relleno, rice and beans – in other words anything Mexican. I’ve lived in Hawaii most of my life but grew up in CA and spent a lot of time south of the border hanging out in fishing villages, camping and racing our sailboat. When we first moved to Maui many years ago there was no Mexican food ingredients to be had in the local grocery stores so I had to learn to make our tortillas and favorite dishes from scratch, sometimes improvising. That’s all changed but when I worked in the travel industry I was on the road for 2 to 3 weeks at a time and all I could think of those last couple of days before heading home was a big plate of Mexican food! In fact, now there’s no question about what’s for dinner tonight 🙂

  4. Haha Michael this post literally has my mouth salivating up a storm. My wife makes this killer meal with a ham roast, this delectable dijon mustard/honey sauce, scalloped potatoes covered in cheese and a prezel/cream cheese/ jello layered salad.
I crave quite often, and if she stopped making it I think that craving might just bury me haha

  5. I really can’t limit it any one favorite Micheal!

But like most, I too enjoy a good and filling meal every now and again! And I really have no particular preferences.

But whenever I attend any type of cultural bazaar, especially those held in a near by park. I love to try food from the various cultures! And I always find one particular dish that I’ve never heard of or tried before, to be extremely tasty!

I’ll really have to thin on this! Who knows, maybe something will come to mind!

  6. There are two meals in particular i miss. . . That is my mothers meatloaf and mashed potatoes as well as her spaghetti. Everything she makes is from scratch and the smell alone is to die for! Every time i got home for a visit i make sure she makes at least one of those for me =D

  7. I miss my grandmother’s fried chicken, cole slaw, and creamy mashed potatoes. It’s 20 times better than KFC out here in the US… but also, more home made and much of the ingredients are organically grown in her small farm…. minus the chicken itself… lol

  8. Mike, every time I arrive to read some good stuff here. You always make me so hungry. Even when I just had a bit.

I love and can not do without Chili. It has to be made by myself. Most do not understand that the longer it simmers. The better the green peppers and onions have to get right. I use the dark beans and love it. Just ground beef and no other meat.

It is the best and would love the next time you come in Boston. Give me a ring and I will bring you some. Sound Good?

Mike, you have a great heart and love for food. I love visualizing me traveling with you to all the locations. Most of the stuff I would not eat. Yet, I am sure I can find something to enjoy. Asia what? Only so much you can eat. I can do do much raw fish and love rice yet take it easy on each meal? The drinks are great! Hot Sockeye or rice wine hot is the best and I understand it is Japanese yet so what ever where in Asia they have hot rice wine, right?
