The world’s largest fast food chain is now Subway, which is a sandwich business, showing the impact the sandwich has had on how we eat.

Quick and convenient, whether hot or cold, the sandwich has a place in all our hearts. So which is your favourite sandwich filling?

There are so many to choose from it a pretty tough choice to pick out your favourite.

The most basic sandwich must be cheese. It’s everywhere and must rank as one of the most popular along with the also classic ham.

You also find classic mixtures in sandwiches, like the BLT (bacon, lettuce & tomato), coronation chicken (a curried mayo sauce), egg and cress the list goes on.

Then we have the ‘luxury’ sandwiches like smoked salmon and cream cheese, the lobster roll

Hot sandwiches get interesting with favourites like the Reuben (salt beef known as corned beef in the US and sauerkraut), the Philly cheese steak, the French steak baguette and the chicken escalope.

Bread can be an important ingredient as seen in the baguette above but also vital in a salt beef on rye.

For some mayo is a must on all sandwiches, but for others every sandwich has to have butter on.

I love salad cream in a sandwich, it works amazingly well with egg. It is also fantastic with canned tuna. If you never tried these I highly recommend it, and add some cucumber to both!

But my favourite is simple and it’s one from my childhood, corned beef (the canned kind), onion and Branston pickle.
