The worst possible taste?

Is there a taste you hate? Personally I only have one thing I cannot abide and that is capers.

We all have preferences, likes and dislikes of whole taste ranges, but these can usually be balanced out by something else. For example I don’t really like the “bitter” taste of Grapefruit, but simply sprinkle some sugar on and I suddenly love it.

I’m talking here about a flavour which you simply cannot bear to eat, a taste that makes you wince just thinking about it. You know a bit like Marmite, some people may love it but others really, really hate it.

I hate capers! Most people I know have no issue with these little green fellows, and I kind of wish I did like them as I hate to miss out on a great meal. It also makes me feel a bit dumb like a little kid complaining about having to eat peas (small greens things too funny that!)

I have tried capers thousands of times, hoping that I will “acquire” a taste for them. Unfortunately my taste buds simply will not let me get over my instant grimacing reaction.

If I find capers have been slipped into a dish (I’m talking to you Italian restaurants!) it completely ruins the meal. The distinct flavour capers have taste to me like the chef has infused my meal with moth balls or some similar horrible “chemical” tang.

There is one thing which I can get away with eating which contains capers and that is tartare sauce. The flavour is just about hidden enough in the sauce so as not to be overpowering. In fact I do like a touch of tartare sauce with my fish and chips…weird isn’t it?

Talking of fish anchovies are one thing I have heard many, many people say they can’t stand, but I love them and can eat those little salty devils straight from the tin all day long.

Funny how ones personal taste works isn’t it?

So what flavour do you hate? Or are you someone lucky enough to like everything?

  1. You have to be totally depraved to enjoy capers 😀

Actually, my wife loves them, but I can’t stand them. However we both enjoy Marmite and anchovies. Not together, you understand (the Marmite and anchovies, that is), but it’s a thought …

Thank you for brightening my day with your culinary wisdom!

    Alan

  2. Mine is coconut. Yuck. If I get even the slightest taste of coconut, I’m turned off. I can’t even deal with coconut combined with other yummy flavors.

  3. I love capers and anchovies and olives – the holy trinity when it comes to a delicious puttanesca. But the one flavour I cannot stand is celery. To me, it tastes like poison and is probably the only thing I won’t eat. Even the thought of it is making my face shrivel up.

  4. Everyone has their likes and dislikes for sure. I can’t bear the taste of cilantro, and am not even too wild about avocados. Many of my friends think I’m horribly out of the loop for avoiding these trendy, supposedly tasty additions to many dishes.

As for things we love, I do think there’s a strong connection between “taste” and our personal history. Many things we associate with happy childhood memories (usually on a subconscious level), become cravings for us as adults.

  5. Your description of the capers made me chuckle. There’s a lot of the vegetable family that I really really dislike. I’m not sure though if any border on hatred but then again I tend to just ignore the food that comes bearing unsavory things. I didn’t realize that tartare sauce contained capers though. I’d have told you that I never eatten a caper but I guess they’ve snuck by me!

  6. HI Michael, Capers remind of eating bugs No Thanks I am not eating them. I am not a very fussy eater and I am open to try Almost anything once.. It is weird how everyone has a different taste for things HUH? Thanks for sharing Chery 🙂

  7. I know this is old, but I found it because I thought I was weird and had to look up if I’m the only one that can’t stand capers! I mean I hate (with the full strength of the word hate) the taste. Glad to know I’m not alone. Hopefully you haven’t acquired a taste for it (as this post is really old) and left me alone in my hate lol.

  8. I can’t stand capers. They’re slipped into almost every salmon and cream cheese bagel nowadays and it completely ruins a perfectly great taste combo! The other taste I can’t deal with is chicken liver. Tried it once and almost threw up, then tried it again a while later hoping I’d acquire the taste…nope.

  9. Hello,

I’m from the U.S., and comforted to know that I’m not the only person who dislikes Capers. I’m not a picky eater by any means , but the first time I had capers was on a bagel with lox and immediately I tasted a strong bitterness that traveled all the way to my stomach and made me feel severely nauseated. This happened not once, but twice; so whenever I see capers as an ingredient I request that they be removed. Awful little devils.
