Being on holiday also seems to make most people a little more adventurous (no not it that way!). They will eat foods they wouldn’t even think of having or making at home justifying it with the words “Well, I am on holiday!”

So what happens when they get home? Most people return to their standard run of mill cuisine and dream of the next holiday when they can try something new again.

It’s not just the taste of the exotic which intoxicates us, it’s also the fact that we are eating somewhere which appears magical compared to the monotony of our day to day lives at home.

I remember eating a pretty straight forward grilled silver snapper with a Greek salad, washed down with a bottle of very nice and crisply cold white wine. Not very exciting? No not really, but I remember that meal fondly because I was eating al fresco in a beautiful restaurant surrounded by lemon tress and grape vines…on the island of Rhodes.

It was the balmy evening and the sweet smell of the lemon trees that massively enhanced my eating experience. I must say the fish was straight out of the sea and perfectly cooked too!

If, unlike me, you are lucky enough to live somewhere that gives you a view of something other than bricks and concrete, you probably think I’m a little unhinged.

However it doesn’t have to be food you have eaten in some far off place, it could be somewhere in your own country. Maybe it was in the middle of the countryside, by the seaside, or if you’re rural in a city.

It’s the feeling, the emotion and the memory which makes this food stay with you. Perhaps the thought of eating it at home means a little of that magic would die.

The image in this article shows grilled sardines (yes I am a big grilled fish fan!), I had them recently on holiday in Lanzarote. Just looking at the picture takes me right back to that lunch, sitting in the blazing sun looking over a wide sandy beach, the ocean gently rolling back and forth.

This is why food is so emotive. Tastes just like smells can transport you somewhere wonderful, if only for a few moments…and what precious moments they are.

Please remember to share you favourite holiday food or food experience in the comment below!

Michael Robinson

Author information

The Food Curator

The Food Curator (AKA Michael Robinson) is an aficionado of all things food and bon viveur based in London.
