Teapigs – A tale of two very different teas

When teapigs contacted me to try out some of their teas I immediately thought of the various herbal and fruit teas they are famous for. Yet when I looked down their huge list of products the ones that stuck out for me were their ‘everyday’ tea (I didn’t even realise they did a regular tea) and an interesting looking green tea power powder!

Let’s start with the everyday tea as this is something we all drink, well, everyday…

The packaging is their familiar style and opening up the pack you immediately notice the teabags themselves look a cut above your average brand. Made from a tactile, silky, bio-degradable material you know there must be something special inside.

I eagerly waited for the kettle to boil and once I heard it click off it was straight in to the cup with the water at full boiling point, the little teapigs bag brewed quickly and efficiently.

Now I like my tea to be of the ‘builders’ variety, so I brew a little bit longer than most, about 4 minutes. With some high street brands brewing for this long can cause your tea to suffer from a tannic overload. I am pleased to say the teapigs tea didn’t and gave me a strong, well brewed cup of tea that tasted smooth and clean.

When it comes to flavour the teapigs everyday brew gives a good balance of fragrance and depth making it a very refreshing cuppa. Simply put this is a nice, well thought out blend that I would be more than happy to serve all day long.

Next up we are looking at something a little more special with teapigs modern matcha kit. Matcha is the name given to green tea which has been ground down into a fine powder and has been revered in Japan for its health properties for centuries. Teapigs matcha is hand picked and certified organic so the quality is very, very high.

This isn’t a tea you brew, rather you mix the powder with a small amount of warm or cold water, milk or fruit juice and take it like a shot. The modern matcha kit includes a very cute shot glass, a whisk for mixing, a measuring spoon and even a little pin badge so you can tell the world how healthy you are!

I tried it with the simple option of some cold spring water and gave it a mix, the powder blended into the water quickly and I took it down in a couple of little gulps.

The flavour of this tea is totally inoffensive and actually quite nice, unlike some similar green health drinks which taste like your forcing down a hay smoothie.

Teapigs matcha tastes sweet and most definitely Japanese!

By that I mean it has that slight ‘seaweed’ flavour that the Japanese love and which seems to permeate all Japanese cuisine, even their deserts! It’s a flavour I love and it does add an exotic air this healthy tea.

So two interesting, very different products from teapigs which show what a tour de force this company is when it comes to delivering great value, high quality teas.

Please remember to share below if you have tried either of these products, or tell us your favourite teapigs variety!
